The good news keeps coming for our community in terms of health care.
A few weeks ago, Yuma Regional Medical Center announced that cancer patients in the area would be getting better care thanks to the hospital's partnership with the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The goal of the arrangement is provision of state-of-the-art testing and treatments which patients must now go elsewhere to receive. Hospital officials said it was part of planning for a sophisticated cancer center in the future.
This was the preliminary stage of the major announcement that came Tuesday when YRMC said it was ready to proceed with the one-stop cancer center on a site near the present Elks Lodge across from the hospital. The center had been pending finalization of a deal to exchange the Elks property for another location owned by the hospital.
The 38,000-square-foot cancer center will be a major advancement in cancer care here and is expected to be ready by early 2014. It will be built on the southwest corner of the Elks site. It will consolidate under one roof care which is now taking place in various places around the community and add to the hospital's cancer care capabilities.
It is a dream come true for both health providers and patients. The intention is ?to provide local cancer patients with the highest level of care without having to leave the community, unless absolutely necessary,? said YRMC's chief executive Pat Walz.
It wasn't easy to achieve. Extended negotiations were needed to get the desired site next to the hospital. It took the cooperation of both the Elks and the local YMCA to make it happen. The two will share the building exchanged for the property. Walz said their cooperation was what made this great achievement for the community possible.
The hospital continues to take steps to be state of the art in health care, and we as a community should be grateful for that.
