Clinton says Northern Ireland requires vigilance

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the extremists still trying to spoil Northern Ireland's peace can be beaten through a commitment to political sacrifice, compromise and vigilance.

Clinton spoke Friday at a Belfast press conference alongside the leaders of Northern Ireland's five-year-old unity government: First Minister Peter Robinson, a British Protestant, and Martin McGuinness, an Irish Catholic.

All three denounced reports of a death threat issued by Protestant extremists against one of Northern Ireland's most prominent female leaders, East Belfast lawmaker Naomi Long.

Long's Alliance Party tries to bridge the divide between Protestant and Catholic. But its offices have come under attack from Protestant vandals this week because of its support for Catholic moves to reduce the flying of British flags on government buildings.
