Climate change: Arctic passes 400 parts per million milestone

Arctic monitoring stations show carbon dioxide levels are now above 400 parts per million. Carbon dioxide is the chief climate-change gas and stays in the atmosphere for 100 years. Before the Industrial Age, carbon dioxide levels were 275 ppm.

The world's air has reached what scientists call a troubling new milestone for carbon dioxide, the main global warming pollutant.

Monitoring stations across the Arctic this spring are measuring more than 400 parts per million of the heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere. The number isn't quite a surprise, because it's been rising at an accelerating pace. Years ago, it passed the 350 ppm mark that many scientists say is the highest safe level for carbon dioxide. It now stands globally at 395.

So far, only the Arctic has reached that 400 level, but the rest of the world will follow soon.

"The fact that it's 400 is significant," said Jim Butler, global monitoring director at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Lab in Boulder, Colo. "It's just a reminder to everybody that we haven't fixed this and we're still in trouble."

Carbon dioxide is the chief greenhouse gas and stays in the atmosphere for 100 years. Some carbon dioxide is natural, mainly from decomposing dead plants and animals. Before the Industrial Age, levels were around 275 parts per million.

For more than 60 years, readings have been in the 300s, except in urban areas, where levels are skewed. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal for electricity and oil for gasoline, has caused the overwhelming bulk of the man-made increase in carbon in the air, scientists say.

It's been at least 800,000 years ? probably more ? since Earth saw carbon dioxide levels in the 400s, Butler and other climate scientists said.

Until now.

Readings are coming in at 400 and higher all over the Arctic. They've been recorded in Alaska, Greenland, Norway, Iceland and even Mongolia. But levels change with the seasons and will drop a bit in the summer, when plants suck up carbon dioxide, NOAA scientists said.

So the yearly average for those northern stations likely will be lower and so will the global number.

Globally, the average carbon dioxide level is about 395 parts per million but will pass the 400 mark within a few years, scientists said.

The Arctic is the leading indicator in global warming, both in carbon dioxide in the air and effects, said Pieter Tans, a senior NOAA scientist.

"This is the first time the entire Arctic is that high," he said.

Tans called reaching the 400 number "depressing," and Butler said it was "a troubling milestone."

Pakistani court acquits 4 of helping NYC bomber

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Saturday acquitted four men who had been charged with helping a Pakistani-American man carry out a failed attempt to detonate a truck bomb in New York's Times Square, said their lawyer and family members.

The four were arrested in the wake of Faisal Shahzad's May 2010 attack, which fizzled when the explosives in his vehicle produced smoke but no blast. Shahzad has pleaded guilty and admitted to getting training from the Pakistani Taliban in the country's tribal region along the Afghan border. He was sentenced to life in prison in the U.S.

The attempted attack increased tension between Pakistan and the United States, which has long accused Islamabad of not doing enough to crack down on militants on its soil who pose a threat to the West.

Even though the men acquitted Saturday had been in custody for two years, very few details had emerged about their closed-door trial in an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, next to the capital Islamabad.

Such trials rarely produce convictions in Pakistan because police often lack basic investigative skills, prosecutors lack training in terror cases and judges and witnesses are often subject to intimidation.

One of the men released Saturday, Muhammad Shoaib Mughal, had been charged with providing Shahzad with financial assistance, said his lawyer, Malik Imran Safdar. The other three men, Humbal Akhtar, Muhammad Shahid Husain and Faisal Abbasi were charged as Mughal's accomplices, said Safdar.

Following their arrests, several of the men were also accused of helping Shahzad link up with militants in the tribal region. But those accusations do not seem to have resulted in any charges.

Akhtar's father said he was ecstatic at his son's release.

"I have suffered a lot during these two tough years," said Muhammed Akhtar. "Finally I got justice."

Two other men arrested by Pakistan in the wake of the attempted Times Square attack were previously released. It's unclear if Pakistan has any other suspects in custody.

Human rights groups have long criticized Pakistani security officials for holding suspects for months, even years, without filing charges or divulging any information about their cases.

Most of the men acquitted Saturday come from the same stock as Shahzad ? wealthy, urban, educated and with careers in computers, telecommunications and graphic design. Mughal was running a large computer dealership in Islamabad before his detention.

One of the things that Shahzad said motivated him to carry out his attack was U.S. drone strikes targeting militants in Pakistan's tribal region. The strikes are very unpopular in Pakistan because many citizens believe they mostly kill innocent people, an allegation disputed by the U.S.

The strikes have continued to cause tension between the U.S. and Pakistani governments, but American officials have made it clear that they have no intention of stopping the attacks, which they see as vital to fighting al-Qaida and the Taliban.

The latest strike occurred Saturday when a drone fired two missiles at a motorbike in Dogh village in the South Waziristan tribal area, killing two suspected militants, said Pakistani intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. It was the fifth such strike in the country in less than two weeks.

Porsche Debuts Cayenne GTS In Leipzig

The Leipzig Auto Show, known as Automobil International (AMI), may lack the prestige of a Paris Motor Show or a Frankfurt Auto Show, but it's still a key event for Porsche. After all, Porsche's factory in Leipzig builds the Cayenne SUV, and is in the midst of a major expansion to begin building the upcoming Macan SUV. In other words, Porsche wants to make a statement that Leipzig, both as a city and as a show, is important to Porsche.

Enter the Porsche Cayenne GTS, which is being debuted at this week's AMI. Like other GTS models, it's meant to bridge the gap between entry level vehicles and more performance-oriented (and pricier) options. In keeping with GTS tradition, the Cayenne GTS gets a 4.8-liter V-8 engine rated at 420 horsepower (20 horsepower more than the Cayenne S), mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Outside, the Cayenne GTS borrows styling cues from the Cayenne Turbo, including a front fascia with large cooling ducts, side skirts, wider fender flares and a twin-wing roof spoiler. In other words, the Cayenne GTS looks like a Cayenne Turbo, but costs significantly less money.

There's no word yet on pricing or when we?ll see the Cayenne GTS stateside, but we'd say within six months after its European launch. The Cayenne sells well here, and offering a "just right" in-between model will help Porsche to grow sales in the U.S. market.

When we say the phrase "collector of Porsche 911s," what comes to mind? Clearly, there's wealth involved, so it's logical to expect a certain level of careful grooming and attire; after all, it's easy to upset other members of the tennis club if your appearance isn't as they expect.

Magnus Walker, part of the pair behind Serious Clothing, isn't your stereotypical Porsche collector. At first glance, he looks more like a hardcore biker or a long-time rock -band roadie than a classic car collector and fashion designer. In fact, with his weathered appearance, chest-length beard and dreadlocked hair, Walker is the kind of guy that most people would cross the street to avoid running into, especially late at night.

Walker is also a very serious collector of early Porsche 911s, with a goal of owning one example of each model built between 1964 and 1973. So far, he's got every year covered through 1972, and clearly knows his way around a workshop.

The video below, found on Autoblog, is a short trailer for an upcoming film by Tamir Moscovici entitled "Urban Outlaw." We'll admit to being captivated by Walker's story, so we'll be sure to follow up when the film is released.
